Nanachoushoku
The nanachoushoku is located in a historic town with loads of brick buildings in Taipei.
We aim to revive the old community by providing organic food, accommodation and an events space for sharing of body mind spirit experiments, both locals and tourists can gather at this multipurpose community hub where they could hang out to have a chat, and where tourists could visit to deepen their individual view of wellness benefits and the story the historic town.
The venue occupies a tiny area between the number of buildings along a sunless lane.
We added the building with fuzzy glass on the bricked façade so-called “light from the gap” to give the space in darkness the same air of openness and conviviality and helping to diffuse direct sunlight.
The restored pinewood of the roof structure and polished terrazzo staircase instead of the cold iron elements create a homely atmosphere, as the glass window allows the landscape to be clearly visible from the space, sunlight can be seen shining to flow through the whole loft.
An attempt to extend the concept of “light from the gap” also made the mood in brightness to fill in whole areas of this space such as rooms, the social hub and a bathroom where below the staircase.
It is a fantastic example of how to reuse the existing structure of typical old Taiwanese buildings due to the limited condition in a modern way with traditional materials. The result of restoration can be seen in reviving the small community from the typical situation of population outflow in a historic town in Taiwan.
